Age 4, Grade Kindergarten-12 and Adult
Participants will select one poem from the Catalog of Choices. By reciting the poem, the participant can bring about the images and beauty of the language and help the judge determine the level of understanding that the participant has for the poem. Participants will be evaluated based on criteria listed above.
Grade 4-12 and Adult
Participants will select one monologue from the Catalog of Choices. Participants will be evaluated based on the following: voice, eye contact, gestures, correct breathing, use of emphasis and portrayal of the intended mood and tone of the poem. Participants will be evaluated based on criteria listed above.
Grade 4-12 and Adult
Participants will select a piece from the Monologue or Duologue Catalog of Choices. Some props and costume are allowed and should be used efficiently and creatively. No props that imitate weapons or have the capability of igniting or causing harm are allowed. Participants will be evaluated based on criteria listed above.
Grades 7-12 and Adult
Participants will select a topic from the Catalog of Choices. Each participant will deliver a four- to five-minute informative speech. Participants will be evaluated based on criteria listed above.
Solo Improvisation, Duo Improvisation, Group Improvisation
Solo and Duo grades 4-12 and Adult
Group Improvisation 9-12 and Adult
Each participant/group will prepare and deliver a three minute improvisation based on three words or three objects in any combination suggested by a judge. The presenter/s will be allowed fifteen minutes to prepare. Participants will be evaluated based on criteria listed above.
Duo Improvisation note: The duo will be given individual comments. They will be judged and awarded as a pair.
Group Improvisation note: The group will not be given individual comments. They will be judged and awarded as a group.
Grades 9-12 and Adult
Participants will prepare and deliver a five-minute mock radio newscast. Preparation time will begin 30 minutes prior to delivery. Participants will be provided with a packet containing international, national and local news. Participants will then have the preparation period to prioritize segments and compose a newscast. At the end of the preparation period, the participants will be called by number into the studio. Each participant will have up to two additional minutes to get comfortable with the microphone. Participants will deliver the newscast to the judge. Mock newscasts will be used for competition purposes only. A penalty of five points will be assessed for presentations that exceed the five-minute time limit. Competitors may use their own stopwatch to keep track of time. The judge and/or timekeeper will track time, as well.
