JUDGE'S CRITERIA AND EXPECTATIONS

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors Degree in English, Theatre, Communications, or Business or similar qualifications from an accredited institution or experience in coaching or judging speech tournaments. Judges will sign a letter of agreement confirming their availability as a volunteer for the day of the competition. If after agreeing to serve as a judge the volunteer discovers a scheduling conflict or becomes ill, the judge will make every effort to secure a qualified substitute. Judges should notify the Judging Committee Chairperson of any changes in their availability at least 24 hours in advance of the competition.

Volunteer judges will receive an orientation packet prior to the competition that will include check in time for the day of the competition; guidelines prepared for the category they are judging; a sample scoring sheet; the location of their competition room and other conference details. Upon arrival at the competition, judges must sign in at the judges' registration table and attend a short orientation.

Each judge is required to call roll at the beginning of a round. NOTE: It is preferable if Judges do not judge a person they know personally or have taught. If they find themselves in this situation they need to continue judging their category and notify the Chairperson of the Judge's committee after the event.

The decision of the Judge's is final. Judges will give written feedback which will be available one hour after the end of the category. If you need to leave before you can pick up your score sheet, we cannot guarantee that you will get your remarks/score. Judges will give general verbal feedback at end of the session to those who remain in the room. Judges will not disclose scores to participants, parents or coaches at this general session. Scoring will be as follows:

90 points and
  above
OUTSTANDING
87 – 89 pointsDISTINCTION
84 – 86 pointsCOMMENDED
80 – 83 pointsMERIT
75 – 79 pointsFAIR

Judges will be asked to complete a short feedback form at the conclusion of their shift and return it to the Judging Committee Chairperson. This will help guide the steering committee's decisions regarding future competitions.
