A Universal Language--Part II

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:Personal journeys come to the forefront in the second part of our trip with the Indiana Poets to Quezaltepeque in El Salvador.  JL Kato fights to overcome the language barrier and thinks about his mother, a Japanese citizen, who brought JL to the United States when he was only two years-old.  "It struck me," he says, "that she struggled, not knowing English in the Midwest—and now I'm struggling, too, trying to communicate as well."  We also meet Marvin Cortez, Jonathon Velasquez and Camilo Fonseca, three Salvadoran poets who announce that they will make poetry workshops for young people a permanent fixture in honor of their Hoosier visitors.  And team leader Joyce Brinkman makes a memorable acquaintance.  "I was sorry that anybody had to live in the conditions that that woman was in," Joyce remembers.  "But, by the same token, I never will forget her smile."

A Carve Above the Rest

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:Our next story is hosted by Dr. Sharon Hoog from Eli Lilly and Company.  Dr. Hoog was the winning bidder at the last WFYI auction to create a story for "Across Indiana" and our producers let her pick any idea she wanted to do.  She chose art—but a special kind of art—something that often goes unnoticed because people just don't look up!  Dr. Hoog's a fan of the beautiful ornamentation that is one tradition of Indiana limestone carving and she's going to show you how it's done.  We're dropping in on the master carver at Bybee Stone Company in Ellettsville, where carving is still done the old-fashioned way—by hand.  Prepare to be impressed!

A Rose by Any Other Chic

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:If the names "Honey West," "77 Sunset Strip," and "Invasion of the Saucer Men" ring a bell with you, we have someone you'll want to visit.  It's hard to quite explain where we're going—only that Red Rose Vintage Clothing Home Parties in Indianapolis is like a "Planet Hollywood" for pop culture from the 40s thru 70s.  Oh, and no need to dress for the occasion—you'll be able to "put on the Ritz" in style there—with threads that are the cat's pajamas and the bee's knees.

And for those of you who like cameos, check out WFYI videographer Chris Elberfeld "moonlighting" as a model—wearing a "Miami Vice" crew jacket, 1970s platform shoes, and a 1940s smoking jacket.

Travel Across Indiana

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:Many of you viewers are familiar with the new "Across Indiana" jingle, also known as the "Bouncing Ball" song.  You'll meet the team behind it:  Lafayette songwriter Don Coghill, singer Judy Fitzgerald from the Actors Theatre of Indiana, Terry Woods from Beef&Boards and recording producer Cedric Freeman.  And we'll be joined in-studio to sing a new song from Don by Cub Scout Troop 179 from Crooked Creek Elementary—who just "happened" to be touring WFYI right at the time of taping, courtesy of Tiffany Rife.
