History Matters: Dr. Harvey Middleton
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | The year was 1905 and ten year-old Harvey Middleton watched helplessly as a doctor completed a perfunctory exam of his gravely ill mother -- then left, saying that he "was in a hurry." That's when Harvey decided that he would be a doctor when he grew up. Yet -- although he graduated from the prestigious Harvard Medical School -- he couldn't find work when he moved to Indianapolis. You see, Harvey Middleton was black. But he never gave up. He became a champion of the poor, writing letter after letter to the governor's office on behalf of those needing access to better medical care, until he finally reached his goal of becoming Wishard Hospital's first African American physician. | | Credits: | Angel Carothers and Kyle Travers | | Location: | Indianapolis | | Contact: | www.indianahistory.org |
A Safe Haven for the Spirit
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | If you’re a soul in search of answers, you might take a walk around the little horseshoe drive in Chesterfield. That’s because everyone who lives on it is a psychic, tarot card reader, medium or spiritualist of some kind. And while they would never claim to be able to predict the future, they will promise you this: you’ll get some genuine help about unlocking the power inside yourself to find the answers you need. | | Credits: | Tasha Tribby, Jon Mobley and Kristin L. Porch Talk
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | Yes, sad but true -- they don’t make ‘em like they used to. In fact, its seems like we’re in more of hurry every year to tear down those things of yesterday and replace them with modern-day equivalents that just don’t hold a candle to the things of the past. Or so thinks our good friend, minister Philip Gulley, who in this trip’s “Porch Talk,” laments the passing of the neighborhood hardware store. But fear not, for Philip's taking us to one in Roachdale that's still in business -- a universal gathering spot where friends can chat, jokes can be told and the Coke machine still costs a dime. | | Credits: | Aric Hartvig | | Location: | Roachdale | | Contact: | None Provided |
Painting with Poetry
| Watch This Segment Online. | | Description: | Fort Wayne's Helen Frost is a pretty soft-spoken gal, but don’t let that mild-mannered exterior fool you. Once she made up her mind to become a writer, she threw herself into the journey whole-heartedly and didn’t let a whole raft of rejection letters deter her one bit. Today, she’s a respected children’s author whose books have sold throughout the globe. How did she get started? Well, by following the most fundamental rule for any author: write what you know. Her first best-seller, "Keesha's House," is based on her years at her "other job," working with at-risk middle-school kids. | | Credits: | Carrie Savage-Zimmerman | | Location: | Fort Wayne | | Contact: | www.helenfrost.net |
