The Street's Storyteller

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:Could you tell someone’s life story in 700 words? Well, that’s what Tom Keating did in the pages of the Indianapolis Star over 3,500 times -- and the people loved him for it. Thousands of readers joined him every morning for a look into the lives of their fellow Hoosiers, told through Keating’s simple but poetic prose and the sensitivity of his observations. Those are skills that Tom would have wanted to be passed on to future generations. And so they are -- through a writing competition held in his honor. "Across Indiana" looks at this wonderful legacy with a journey of our own through this particular Hoosier life, one marked by a passionate need to be out there on the streets and to tell the stories of the common man.

The Fifth Beatle

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:Our second story is also about doing something you love, only when he started, Indianapolis' Tom Fontaine had no idea that he could be successful at it. Now, he’s got quite a little cottage industry going, and it features people with such legendary names as Elvis, Elton and Cher. For Tom, that’s a good start. But what he’s really known for around the world for is his collection of all kinds of stuff signed by people with the names of John, Paul, George and Ringo.

A Scribe of a Different Kind

Watch This Segment Online.
Description:If you called the subject of our next story an “ole scrimshaw” he wouldn’t be insulted at all. In fact, he would tell you that he wrote the book on it. Sweetwater's Ron Newton is not only preserving the nearly lost American art form of engraving on whalebone, he's keeping it alive by teaching it to others through his book "Learning How To Scrimshaw" -- all here, from landlocked Indiana!
