Carrie Newcomer pens song for WFYI

National recording artist and native Hoosier Carrie Newcomer has penned a song telling the story of WFYI Public Media and its mission in the community.

“Can You Imagine” uses rural and urban imagery from central Indiana to describe how the spirit of the people and the mission of public media meld to create a vision of highest potential for ourselves and community.

“I have a longtime love and appreciation for public media,” says Newcomer. “I feel that WFYI and public media are places where we can still go to have the kind of conversation that helps us reclaim a common narrative and a common good.”

The sunset glows over rolled hay bales
A bluegill pond lined with brown cattails
And the bright city skyline has a pulse of its own
This is the place we call home

To work together and love this land
Some say that we can’t but I know that we can
With the gathering of women a strong quilt is sewn
Every courthouse was built stone by stone

Chorus: It’s a chance to expand
A call to explore
A bridge to each other
And to be something more
Can you just imagine what we could create
When we wonder and ponder and celebrate

Hear our voices grow in every neighborhood
Raising children who read and join the common good
We’re the kind of people who hope and believe
We dream and imagine then roll up our sleeves

Chorus: It’s a chance to expand
A call to explore
A bridge to each other
And to be something more
Can you just imagine what we could create
When we wonder and ponder and celebrate
