Frequently Asked Questions

Tell me more about PNC Presents PBS KIDS in the Park

This is WFYI’s 22nd annual family festival, and our way of thanking the community for your support of public media in central Indiana.  All are welcome to attend. While admission to the festival is free, we do offer some specialized opportunities for a nominal fee (see Specialized Experiences). You’ll find us at Military Park, located at the corner of N. West Street and W. New York Street, in downtown Indianapolis. (If you’re a regular at this event, you will remember this park as our “old location” rather than last year’s location.)

The event includes opportunities for you to meet many of your favorite PBS KIDS costumed characters. Additionally, we will have two stages of kid-friendly entertainment, a crafts tent, two bounce-houses, and many other activities at our various tents and booths at the festival. Food is available for purchase at a variety of food trucks. You may also wish to purchase character balloons for sale in the merchandise tent.

What PBS KIDS characters will be there?

Alpha Pig
Buddy (from Dinosaur Train)
Curious George
Daniel Tiger
Maya & Miguel
Peep & Chirp
Peg + Cat
Princess Presto
Sid the Science Kid
Super Why
Wonder Red
Zoe (and her pet rock Rocco)

How can my child meet these characters?

Each character will be available to greet children at set times posted at each location. At a Meet and Greet location, your child can walk up to the character and have his or her photo taken with the character (bring your camera!). There will be lines, often in the sun, so please be prepared to wait your turn.

Where do I park, and is there a cost for parking?

Parking is not part of this event, and we do not have specific parking recommendations. There is street parking near the park. The closest parking lot is the IUPUI parking lot at 1004 W. Vermont Street. According to their website, cost for parking is from $4.00 to $10.00, depending on the time you are there. Cash or credit cards accepted.

Will there be food at the event?

Yes. There will be a variety of food trucks with family-friendly foods available for purchase.

What kind of entertainment can I expect?

On our two stages, we will have popular kid-friendly performers from our local community. The following groups will perform at this year’s event:
Know No Stranger (our headliner)
Hands on Rhythm with Bill Bailey
Indy Air Bears Jump Rope Team
Jump for Joy
Kid Kazooey
Mr. Daniel
On Pointe Dance
Red Alert Robotics
Tiki Tom Toms

In addition to stage entertainment, there will be two jump-houses, games and crafts, plus booths with other activities.

Can I bring my pet?

This event is very crowded, and takes place mostly in the open sun. Please leave your pet at home.

Weather tips

Much of the event takes place in the sun, so be prepared for a hot day.  You will want to bring your own water, or purchase drinks from food truck vendors. And don’t forget the sunscreen and shade hats!

What happens if it rains?

This event will take place rain or shine. However, if there are severe storms in the area, we will have information about the event’s status on television at WFYI 1, on radio at 90.1, or online at, giving you the latest information about whether the event is still a “go”.  We will also communicate directly with event attendees via PA announcements with instructions on where to take shelter in case of severe weather.

I’ve heard there is a special breakfast prior to the event. What is that?

WFYI hosts a VIP Breakfast for those who have Family Memberships with WFYI. Participants come early to the park and eat breakfast with a PBS KIDS character, enjoy some kid-friendly entertainment, and get their photos taken with the character. (Parking is included) Learn more about WFYI Family Membership. Your membership with WFYI helps keep public media thriving in central Indiana. Thank you!

What are the Block Parties I’ve heard about?

Block Parties are new this year, and are designed as an add-on event for families who want a more specialized experience at the park. We have three separate events, located inside the Herron School of Art & Design building. At each block party, your family can get your photo taken with a PBS KIDS character, enjoy kid-friendly entertainment, create a special craft item, and enjoy a snack, in a more relaxed and air-conditioned environment. You may purchase tickets and attend all three Block Parties. Tickets are $30 each for a family of up to four, and $10 per additional child. Your support of Block Parties helps keep WFYI Public Media thriving in central Indiana. Thank you! Learn more about each Block Party here.
