WFYI Public Television’s free family celebration took place Saturday, June 21, 2008 on American Legion Mall and Veterans Memorial Plaza — downtown Indianapolis.
15th year for this one-of-a-kind family festival — Let’s Meet is the largest PBS KIDS event of its kind in the nation
2008 festival theme was: "Celebrating 15 Years of Fun"
This year’s presenting sponsors were Riley Hospital for Children and Marsh Supermarkets. Additional support was provided by The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Conner Prairie, Fifth Third Bank, Domino’s Pizza, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IndyMoms.com, the Wonder Trail at the Indiana State Fair, Indianapolis Marion County Public Library and AXA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AXA Advisors, LLC
14 PBS KIDS characters made special appearances: Clifford the Big Red Dog, Super Why and Wonder Red from Super WHY!, Maya & Miguel, Piggley Winks, Word Girl, Abby Cadabby & Grover from Sesame Street, Curious George, Bob the Builder, Arthur, Professor Multo from The Zula Patrol, and Caillou
Festival attendance exceeded 40,000.
Families enjoyed an eclectic mix of engaging hands-on activities hosted by some of Central Indiana’s leading arts and service organizations, including Russian dance demonstrations, craft making with earth-friendly materials, interactive theater games, a live reptile exhibit, train rides, face painting, balloon artists, children’s book giveaways, Chinese and Spanish storytelling sessions, Play Dough and bubble-making stations, and much more.
Nonstop entertainment on two distinct stages
On the WFYI South Stage (located in Veterans Memorial Plaza), Miss Rosa, host of PBS KIDS’ pre-school programming block, conducted storybook readings
IndyMoms.com North Stage (located in American Legion Mall) performers included: Express Kids, Arthur & Ms. Page Turner, Bill Bailey, Moriah’s Music and Children’s Theatre Institute
Opening Ceremonies began at 10 am with a proclamation from the City of Indianapolis, recognition of sponsors and a parade of colorful characters
• Other Highlights
Prevent Blindness of Indiana provided vision screenings for 144 children in the Riley Hospital for Kids Tent
WFYI and the Department of Public Works Event Recycling Team provided recycling with plastic receptacles for attendees and cardboard recycling for sponsors and vendors. A result of these efforts, the waste from the event was cut by one third!
254 WFYI Staff, Volunteers and Interns helped to make the 2008 Let’s Meet PBS Kids in the Park possible.
