INDIANAPOLIS -- Finding ways for teachers to engage students in agriculture related science education is the goal of a free series of workshops being offered this weekend at the Indiana State fairgrounds.

The Teacher Development Workshop is open to Indiana middle school teachers and will provide innovative, interactive lessons and tools that they can take back to their classrooms.

Leslie Gordon, media and community outreach manager for the Indiana State Fair says this year’s theme is inspiring the workshops.  "This being the Year of the Farmer, it only makes sense to highlight how that connects to these farmers’ daily lives and how that flows down to the food that we eat," explained Gordon.

Five different sessions linking science with agriculture will be presented with topics ranging from Chemistry to Garbage Can Botany.  The program aims to arm teachers with ideas and resources to get kids excited about STEM education.

The fair will also help connect teachers with other educational opportunities through its global learning initiative called ‘The Barns’.

"We always do different field trips at the fair," said Gordon. "These teachers who are at the workshops get a first look at those."

There are 100 spots available for Saturday’s event that starts at 9 a.m. Teachers can sign up online at in.gov/statefair/barn.
