Indiana State Museum, IUPUI To Discuss Slavery Film

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — The documentary film "Slavery by Another Name" will be the focus of a free, public forum next week hosted by the Indiana State Museum, the Freetown Village living history site and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

"Slavery by Another Name" tells the stories of mostly Southern black men charged with crimes like vagrancy who were bought and sold and subjected to sometimes deadly working conditions as unpaid convict labor up until World War II.

The documentary is part of a film series developed by the National Endowment for Humanities to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The forum will begin at noon Jan. 29 in the Dean and Barbara White Auditorium at the State Museum in downtown Indianapolis. It will feature excerpts from the film.
