CHICAGO (AP) — A man wanted in a string of weekend shootings in Indianapolis opened fire on officers who tracked him to a Chicago apartment, wounding one and keeping the others at bay for six hours in a nighttime standoff that locked down a large area.

The suspect fired from a window Tuesday as officers approached the apartment building in the Englewood neighborhood on the city's South Side, striking a 58-year-old police captain in the head and shoulder, police said. The wounded officer was hospitalized in stable condition.

Dozens of heavily armed officers flooded the area and evacuated nearby residents, closed off streets, and even shut down a major commuter rail line through the neighborhood. Armored vehicles and officers carrying high-powered rifles surrounded the building.

Police in Indianapolis identified the suspect as 42-year-old Daniel Brown, of Indianapolis. He was arrested shortly before midnight, said Chicago police spokeswoman Janel Sedevic. A second man was found dead in the same apartment of an apparent gunshot wound, but it was unclear who shot him, said Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Independent Police Review Authority.

Brown is accused of wounding three people in separate shootings last Saturday in a burst of violence that began with an argument with his girlfriend.

The couple was traveling in a car with one of the girlfriend's female friends and Brown's nephew. Brown accused the friend of interfering in the couple's relationship, pulled a gun and shot her, according to an affidavit from an Indianapolis police detective.

After being shot, the friend jumped from the car and fled on foot. Brown chased her and continued to fire shots, according to the detective. Officers found her inside a gas station with a gunshot wound.

A short time later, Brown shot another woman at a motel and a man at a shopping center, the detective said. Investigators did not have a motive for those other shootings, but police said Brown knew the victims and they were not random acts.

It was not immediately clear if Brown already had an attorney.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Brown and he has been charged in connection with the three Indianapolis shootings. Authorities have yet to announce charges related to Tuesday's standoff and the wounding of the officer.

The identity of the officer has not been released, but police said he is a decorated 29-year veteran of the department. He was surrounded by family and was in good spirits at Stroger Hospital, police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said.

"He's going to have a headache," McCarthy said outside the hospital.
