LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — The Lafayette police department has issued a warning that someone is using its non-emergency telephone number as part of a scam.

Officials say the scam involves people posing as IRS agents who "clone" the department telephone number to make it appear police are involved. The callers say they are collecting overdue taxes. Police say officers would not call to try to collect taxes.

They are urging anyone who receives such a call to hang up. They should not send any money.

Police say people with questions about tax issues should call the IRS.
