Mayor Greg Ballard says he learned a lot from last winter’s the ice, snow and subzero temperatures such as having warming shelters on standby.

“I think there is all sorts of tactical lessons that everybody learned last year just on different things: food, warming shelters, things like that we can apply this year. No question about that,” he said.

With temperatures plunging below zero, Ballard announced that the City of Indianapolis would run on a two-hour delay Wednesday and Thursday in an effort to protect more than 7,000 city employees. He also encouraged business and schools to take precautions.

Zach Adamson, City Councilor at Large, says the city was “woefully ill-prepared” last year for the snow and brutal cold of the” polar vortex” and believes that it’s never bad to plan ahead.

“If it ends up not being as bad, then people are prepared for it," Adamson said.

Ballard also issued a yellow travel advisory until weather conditions improve. That means drivers should take extra caution.
