Police Plan Stepped Up Enforcement On I-94/90

LOWELL, Ind. (AP) — State police are stepping up enforcement along Interstates 94 and 90 in northern Indiana as part of an effort by 15 states to have no fatalities from Aug. 1-4 during what is being billed as the "I-90/94 Challenge."

The challenge covers more than 5,600 miles between Washington state and New York. The challenge will use education, awareness and strict enforcement to try to save lives and remind motorists to drive safely.

Law enforcement will be focused on violators who are speeding, driving drunk, driving distracted, not wearing seat belts or other violations that puts lives at risk.

The challenge was initiated by the Minnesota State Patrol to help the International Association of Chiefs of Police reach its goal this year of reducing traffic fatalities by 15 percent.
