Thieves Steal Statue Of Eve From Indiana University Campus

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a 300-pound, solid bronze statue of Eve has been stolen from Indiana University's Arboretum.

Officials say the biblical figure's one leg was sawed with a power tool and the other leg broken away at the ankle. They think the theft happened over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Just the statue's two feet and a small base remains, which university officials have removed along with a statue of Adam.

The (Bloomington) Herald-Times reports that the $30,000 sculpture was made by retired IU South Bend fine art professor Anthony Droege. He donated it to the campus.

IU campus art curator Sherry Rouse says the statue is a loss if it's not returned because there is no mold to recreate it.
