GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) — Officials say a double-decker tour bus flipped onto its side on a highway south of Indianapolis, badly injuring one person and hurting more than a dozen others.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Shawn O'Keefe says the bus carrying between 50 and 60 people crashed about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 65 when its driver swerved to avoid a minor crash that had occurred 10 minutes earlier.

"The driver apparently didn't see it because of the rain or something and swerved to avoid it," O'Keefe said. "The bus driver swerved and ended up turning the bus over on its side and it went into the median."

The roadway was wet from overnight storms and some light rain continued in central Indiana about the time of the crash.

Emergency workers on the scene reported six to eight serious injuries, along with 20 to 25 people with moderate or minor injuries, O'Keefe said. At 7 a.m., a spokesperson for Indiana University Health said six crash victims had been transported to Methodist Hospital and were in stable condition.

Indianapolis television stations reported the bus was operated by the Megabus line and was traveling from Atlanta to Chicago. Messages from The Associated Press to Megabus weren't immediately returned.
