Indianapolis Metropolitan Police continue to investigate an incident outside the City-County Building Wednesday involving a shooting victim driven downtown after being shot at a still-unknown separate location.

The incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when a man driving east in the 200 block of East Market Street in a bullet-riddled maroon Dodge Ram pickup truck frantically waved down an IMPD officer driving the opposite direction.

Police said the officer made contact with the driver, identified Thursday as William Smith, 32 of Indianapolis, and found a yet-to-be-identified female victim in the truck’s passenger seat with multiple gunshot wounds.

Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to Eskenazi Hospital where she remains on life support and is listed in critical condition. Police were withholding the victim’s name as of Thursday morning.

Police found a handgun on Smith while responding to the incident, but whether or not he was involved in the victim's shooting is at this point unclear. Smith was taken into custody for further questioning Wednesday afternoon. He has since been arrested on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, according to police.

IMPD continues to investigate Smith’s involvement in the shooting and his relationship to the victim.
