Indiana experienced an increase in workplace fatalities in 2013. That’s according to the Indiana Department of Labor Occupational Fatality Census released Monday.

There were 123 deaths related to workplace related incidents last year — up from an all-time low of 115 in 2012. The department began keeping track of numbers in 1992.

While the number is an increase over last year’s number, it represents a wider trend of decreasing worker deaths since an all-time high of 195 in 1994. Department of Labor Spokesperson Chetrice Mosley says it’s a trend the department is committed to maintaining.

“From a Department of Labor perspective is really stay committed to decreasing worker fatalities through outreach, training, safety consultations, recognition of businesses whom are exemplary in enforcing and being safe,” Mosley says.

Nearly half of all deaths were due to transportation-related incidents. The second highest cause was “violence and other injuries by persons or animals”.
