KID-FRIENDLY WEB USE

Kids now need to be media literate. They need to understand, analyze, evaluate and create in film, radio, TV, and the Internet.

They also need to be aware of the dangers. This is especially true of the Internet, where the technology is full of promise and peril. Information found on a Web site may be totally accurate or deliberately misleading. What's a parent to do?

According to Cable In The Classroom, the non-profit group that gives schools FREE access to educational TV and online programs, parents can help children become safe and responsible users of the Internet by asking questions like these:

  • Who created the site and for what purpose?
  • Is the information reliable and accurate?
  • What techniques are used to grab and hold my attention?

Encourage children to be thoughtful Web users. For more information on media literacy and the Internet, contact Cable In The Classroom at 1-800-743-5355 or www.ciconline.org.

Megan S. Hookey, Managing Director of Cable In The Classroom is available for live or taped radio interviews and call-in shows. To discuss scheduling, please call Lisa Friel at 703-549-2805 or e-mail ClassroomCable@aol.com.
