Modified payphone collecting your Indy 500 stories

The Indianapolis 500 isn’t just a motorsports tradition – it’s a family tradition that draws fans from all generations and all walks of life, year after year, to the corner of 16th and Georgetown. It’s the stuff of story and legends.

In honor of the 100th running of the race, WFYI Public Media is inviting people to share a favorite story for the project “My 500”.

Beginning Thursday, May 5, WFYI’s Speak Up Phone will be stationed inside the Speedway Centre for the Arts (1340 W Main Street, Speedway) to gather stories from passerby. The Speak Up Phone is a modified payphone that is simple to use: just lift the receiver, listen to the short message and prompt. Users then have four minutes to record their response. The recordings are then emailed to WFYI where they’re edited for sound quality and usability.

User stories will be shared as part of a WFYI News on-air project. Not able to get to Speedway? Share your story online instead at wfyi.org/my500.

This project is made possible through the support of the 100th Running Host Committee of the Indianapolis 500 and the 500 Gives Back Program.
