Matt Shafer Powell is a Michigan native with more than 30 years of experience in electronic media production and management. He joined WFYI from WUOT-FM in Knoxville, Tenn., where he spent 14 years as Director of News Content while also developing and leading the station’s community engagement strategy.
Under Powell’s direction, WUOT captured numerous regional and national awards, including two national Edward R. Murrow awards for excellence in electronic journalism. He is also a former board member of Public Radio News Directors Inc (PRNDI), a national resource organization for editors, reporters and news managers.
At WFYI, he oversees the News, TV Production, Programming and Community Engagement departments, and serves as a member of the station’s Executive Leadership.
Powell holds a B.A.A. from Central Michigan University. He and his wife, Michelle, have three grown children.
