IndyCar announced an extension with NBC Sports on Tuesday that guarantees a majority of its races will be on the main network broadcast rather than cable.

One year after NBC assumed the rights from longtime broadcaster ABC, the network is preparing to bring one of the iconic events in sports to a potentially record-setting television audience Sunday.

NBC took over the broadcast rights this year from ABC, the network that had aired the race for 54 years.

Under the new contract, eight IndyCar races including the Indianapolis 500 will be broadcast on NBC next season, up from five that ABC aired. The rest of the schedule will be on NBC Sports Network.
