Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies
Ken Burns presents a three-part series, "The Story of Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies," March, 30, 31 and April 1 at 9 p.m. on WFYI 1.
The six-hour film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book "The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer" by Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D., and will be directed by the award-winning filmmaker Barak Goodman. This “biography” of cancer begins with its first documented appearances thousands of years ago and continues through the 20th century as physicians, scientists, and advocates develop strategies to cure, control and conquer cancer. The series reflects the epic scale of those battles, which have reshaped the way the public sees cancer, stripping away some of the fear and misunderstanding that have long surrounded it.
The Story of Cancer in Indianapolis
WFYI is proud to support the Story of Cancer with additional programming and content. This includes a special "Sound Medicine Radio Hour" that will include interviews with doctors, patients and researchers who will talk about the challenges, work, and advances in dealing with cancer from all sides of the story.
Community members are invited to participate in three conversations with caregivers, physicians, patients and clergy from the Indianapolis community. Each of the conversations will focus on specific issues faced by patients, families and other loved ones. The conversations will include religion and faith during the cancer journey, the value and role of palliative care, and the path forward in research and treatments.
