INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Department of Veterans' Affairs would be required to have a designated coordinator for issues involving female military veterans under a bill advancing in the state Legislature.
The Senate Veterans Affairs Committee voted 7-0 on Tuesday to send the proposal to the full Senate for consideration.
Bill sponsor Sen. Vaneta Becker of Evansville says the state's Women Veterans' Program needs a strong leader to ensure that female veterans get the attention they deserve.
State officials say more than 33,000 female veterans live in Indiana and have served during each war period since World War II.
Gov. Mike Pence last week appointed Air Force reservist Laura McKee as Indiana's first state coordinator for female veterans.
