What can a 75-year-old science fiction classic teach us about the future?

Technology promises to connect us, but can it also drive us further apart? Seventy-five years after its publication, Ray Bradbury’s The Illustrated Man continues to spark conversations about some of the most important questions facing society today: How is technology changing our lives and relationships? What do we fear, and what do we hope for, as we look toward the future? How do imagination, family, and community shape the world we create together?

Join Pulitzer Prize-winning and New York Times bestselling author Daniel Kraus, NASA planetary scientist Dr. Abigail Fraeman, deputy project scientist for the Curiosity rover mission, and award-winning Indianapolis author and Afrofuturist Maurice Broaddus for an engaging conversation that explores the enduring relevance of Bradbury’s work and the intersections of science, storytelling, technology, and humanity.

This free public event is the culminating experience of the 2026 Indianapolis Common Read, a city-wide initiative that has brought together readers, students, educators, libraries, book clubs, workplaces, and community organizations through a shared reading experience. Throughout the fall, participants have explored The Illustrated Man and its themes through reading groups, community discussions, educational programming, and cultural events designed to foster dialogue and connection across Central Indiana.

Presented by IU Indianapolis in partnership with the Ray Bradbury Center, Indiana Humanities, Indiana Life Sciences Association, the Indianapolis Public Library System, schools, cultural organizations, and community partners, the Common Read demonstrates the power of stories to bring people together around big ideas and shared questions about our future.

Whether you’ve read the book cover-to-cover, participated in a discussion group, or are simply curious about the ideas it inspires, you are invited to join fellow community members for an evening of conversation, reflection, and discovery.

One city. One book. Many perspectives. Join the conversation.

Thousands of copies of The Illustrated Man have been made available through libraries across Indianapolis and surrounding counties.

Connection to community life is shaped by the availability and accessibility of resources, places and services, as well as mobility options that support continued participation. For older adults, these factors can shape community participation and overall wellbeing. As Central Indiana’s population grows older and more residents age in place, understanding what places and resources are within reach and how people access them becomes increasingly important.

This project focuses on whether Central Indiana communities provide the conditions that support participation in community life as residents age. Findings highlight how resources, access and mobility vary across the region and suggest that community-specific supports may be needed. This project aims to help service providers, planners and policymakers better understand where mobility barriers exist, where places and resources are geographically concentrated and which community features support community participation among older adults in Central Indiana.

Join WFYI at Spirit & Place! Inspired by this year's festival theme of connection, this interactive experience guides participants through a series of immersive activities exploring belonging through art, music, interfaith dialogue and shared food.

More than a traditional event, The Village We Make is a participatory journey designed to help attendees discover their "villagers" — the people who strengthen our sense of community and remind us that we don't have to navigate life alone. Together, we'll explore what it means to build bridges across differences and create lasting connections through shared experiences.

This experience is intended for those ages 14 and older. To fully participate in the journey and enjoy the complete experience, attendees are asked to remain for the duration of the event. Participants are asked to bring Bluetooth-compatible earbuds or headphones to take part in one of the planned activities. If you do not have your own, a limited number will be available to borrow.

Doors open at 1:45 p.m. Come ready to connect, contribute and help create the village we all need. Click here for more information on the Spirit & Place festival.
