A Conversation About Mental Health And School Safety

Indiana lawmakers say they will prioritize school safety in the upcoming legislative session  –– an issue that’s gained attention after two school shootings in Indiana this year. But it’s not a new focus for many schools.

Hamilton Southeastern Schools received of a Lilly Foundation grant last year to support school counseling. Now, the district has 17 embedded licensed mental health providers. WFYI education reporter Carter Barrett spoke with Brooke Lawson, the mental health coordinator at HSE schools, about the connect between mental health and school safety.

Carter Barrett was a reporter for Side Effects Public Media, a Midwest health reporting collaboration based at WFYI. A long-time Hoosier, she is thrilled to stay in her hometown to cover public health. Previously, she covered education for WFYI News with a focus on school safety. Carter graduated with a journalism degree from Indiana University, and previously interned with stations in Bloomington, Indiana and Juneau, Alaska.
