Accidental overdose deaths have declined in Marion County, according to new data from the IU-based Center for Health and Justice Research.

In 2018, opioid overdose deaths fell 13% in the county, and prescription opioid overdose deaths fell even more. Cocaine and alcohol-related overdoses also decreased.

However, the death toll from overdoses remains high 361 last year. Opioids were detected in a majority of those deaths.

The report says overdose deaths attributed to fentanyl a synthetic opioid and methamphetamine slightly increased.

Overdose deaths also declined nationally in 2018.
