The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported a man was arrested for neglect causing death after a child died in what police believe was an accidental shooting Friday night. Responding officers reported the child had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, was in critical condition and pronounced dead at Riley Hospital.

The incident occurred on the 1300 block of North Kealing Avenue.

Initial police reports stated both parents were on the scene and it appeared the wound was self-inflicted and accidental. In the statement announcing the arrest Saturday, Lt. Shane Foley with IMPD's Public Affairs Office said the man arrested is Jahbar Scott, 25, and the charge came after an investigation and consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

"An arrest is merely an accusation and Scott should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty," Foley said.

Foley said he did not know if Scott is the child's father. The child's name and age have not been released.

The final charging decisions will be made by the MCPO.
