Activists first observed logging on Tuesday but are unsure when it first started. The DNR didn't release an official start date for the logging, but has specified it must be complete no later than March 31, 2018.
Photo provided by Save YellowwoodThe DNR is confirming reports from an environmental group that logging is underway in a section of the Yellowwood State Forest.
The Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry says 1,700 trees were sold by sealed bid to Hamilton Logging last month.
While the DNR released no official start date for the logging, the agency specifies it must be complete no later than March 31, 2018.
Indiana Forest Alliance Director Jeff Stant says several of the group’s members observed logging trucks and cut trees Tuesday. The Indiana Forest Alliance organized a “Save Yellowwood” campaign directed toward Gov. Eric Holcomb.
“We’re surprised that he didn’t intervene, and we’re dismayed, but we haven’t given up,” Stant says. “This is just made our resolve greater to change the policies that are leading to the logging like this back country area.”
According to the Indiana Forest Alliance, there are still protesters camped out in a part of the state forest close to the logging site.
