Dozens of People Overdose In and Around Indy Homeless Shelter

About two dozen drug overdoses were reported in recent days in or around a men's homeless shelter in downtown Indianapolis.

Wheeler Mission's Chief Development Officer Steve Kerr says at least 27 people overdosed inside or nearby.

“We’ve experienced overdoses in the facility before but never ever to this degree,” he says.

Kerr believes someone brought in bath salts, or SPICE, possibly laced with PCP.

“And that could explain why everyone had such a violent reaction," Kerr says. "I watched on our video tapes one man who smoked it behind our building and within one minute was unconscious in the street.”

Kerr says they are working with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to have a greater police presence at the facility, including drug-sniffing dogs.
