Indiana Added to Chicago Emergency Travel Order List, With Exemptions

Indiana is now included under Chicago’s COVID-19 Emergency Travel Order. Starting Friday, those traveling between Indiana and the city will need to quarantine for 14-days unless they’re exempt. 

Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said states are added to Chicago’s emergency travel order list if they have an average of more than 15 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents daily for seven consecutive days. 

The city’s website lists Indiana as currently having 20-30 new daily cases per 100,000 residents. Based on data from the Indiana State Department of Health, the state has averaged 24 new daily cases per 100,000 residents in the last week.

“Obviously the Indiana news is of significance to many people in Chicago,” Arwady said. 

Hoosiers traveling to Chicago must quarantine, unless they work there. Other exceptions for permissible travel include medical care and parental shared custody. The Department of Health is urging Chicago residents to not travel to states on the list.

Individuals found in violation of the order are subject to daily fines, which can total $7,000.

Indiana now joins 25 states or territories on the quarantine list: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
