IU, Purdue Partner To Pair Medical Researchers With Engineers

A new partnership between two Indiana schools aims to advance health care technology by pairing medical researchers with engineers. 

The collaboration is between Purdue University’s College of Engineering and Indiana University’s School of Medicine.

Purdue Dean Mung Chiang says the engineering-medical partnership creates a graduate biomedical program and allows graduate students to apply their findings.

"Let’s say an implantable device or medical engineering – how can we translate laboratory advances into clinical opportunities?" says Chiang.

The partnership formalizes an existing relationship and will build on research projects already in the works. Recent examples of this work include new brain imaging techniques and diabetes reversal therapy.

Chiang says the goal is to improve overall health. 

"It not only is good for our state but it is good for health care challenges we all face," says Chiang. 

The partnership will also provide fellowships for students.
