IUPUI Using Ties To Enroll More Chinese Students

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indiana regional university campus wants to use the state's strong connections with a region south of Shanghai, China, to increase the number of students it enrolls from there.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis announced Wednesday the University Preparatory Program for high school students in Zhejiang Province, China, will prepare a group of students to enroll at IUPUI. The program aims to enroll 35 high school graduates from Zhejiang annually beginning in fall 2016.

Zhejiang has been a sister state to Indiana held for more than 25 years, and Indianapolis is a sister city to Zhejiang's capital of Hangzhou. Hangzhou is China's fourth largest metropolitan area with more than 21 million people.

More than 400 students from China enrolled at IUPUI this fall 2014. They include 30 students from Zhejiang Province.
