A man was killed and two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officers were wounded in a shooting during a pursuit Thursday.

At about 12:40 p.m., the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force and the Lawrence Police Department were investigating a previous shooting on the city’s far east side, according to IMPD. The Indiana Crime Guns Task Force is a partnership between Central Indiana law enforcement agencies that aims to obtain illegally possessed and used weapons.

They saw a potential suspect from that shooting in a vehicle, who began to flee the scene. Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but were unsuccessful.

The vehicle crashed into a parking lot and there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and officers, according to IMPD. Four officers shot at the suspect.

The suspect, a 46-year-old man, died at the scene. Two IMPD officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and were taken to Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition. A passenger who was in the car with the suspect fled the area but was later taken into custody. An AR-15 style rifle was recovered from the scene.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and IMPD Chief Randal Taylor spoke to media Thursday afternoon. They did not directly address the death of the suspect, but focused on illegal weapons in the city.

“I’ll be damned if we aren’t going to do everything we can to identify, to arrest and to punish those participating in this illicit marketplace of death,” Hosgett said.
