Clean up continues in Johnson County after tornadoes tore through the area Friday night.

The storm caused severe damage in the Whiteland area.

Johnson County Emergency Management Agency Director Stephanie Sichting said 17 homes were destroyed and almost 30 homes suffered major damage.

“There were some homes they couldn't access because of the debris.  We had county highway up here with their big equipment and moved some of the heavy debris off the roads. And then they went and searched every house again,” Sichting said.

There were no fatalities or major injuries.  As of Tuesday afternoon thousands of residents were without power.

“REMC got some of Whiteland back on. But not all of them. They can't put them in some of them because the homes are gone,” Sichting said.

An assistance center has been established at the Clark-Pleasant Community Schools administration building for donations.

The National Weather Service confirmed 17 tornadoes touched down across the state Friday night into Saturday morning.

The largest tornado was reported in Sullivan County where three people were killed.
