Meriweather drops out of Indianapolis mayoral race, supports Shackleford

A Democratic candidate for mayor of Indianapolis has dropped out of the race.  Greg Meriweather threw his support behind fellow Democrat Robin Shackleford at an announcement Wednesday.

Meriweather is a consultant who formerly worked for the city. He said Shackleford’s track record as a state lawmaker speaks for itself, and that she will be able to reach many issues that are priorities for him – including infrastructure, crime, poverty and housing.

“It became clear as I campaigned and as more candidates got into the race that there is a need for unity in the city – not more division,” Meriweather said.

The crowded field of candidates still includes Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, who is running for a third term. Local activist Clif Marsiglio and frequent candidates Bob Kern and Larry Vaughn are also running as Democrats. Republicans in the primary race include journalist Abdul Hakim Shabazz, pastor James Jackson, John Couch and Jefferson Shreve.
