Jeremy Reuben / WFYIA new treatment facility for people with substance use problems opened on Indianapolis’ west side.
The Marvetta and Anthony Grimes Family Center has 36 apartments where clients and their family can live together while receiving treatment.
Additional services include on-site daycare provided by St. Mary’s Early Childhood Center, a barber and beauty shop, and free medical, dental, visual, and auditory care at the Seeds of Change Free Clinic.
The center was made possible by a partnership between Volunteers of America and Seeds of Hope.
Sean O’Connor, president of Seeds of Hope, credits the idea to Marvetta Grime, who graduated from Seeds of Hope’s recovery program in 2000. She worked at the nonprofit for years immediately after graduating, becoming its executive director 10 years before her death in May of 2023.
Marvetta lost custody of her children, including her son Anthony, due to her struggle with addiction. When Anthony was four years old he died from neglect while in foster care.
John von Arx, CEO at Volunteers of America, Ohio and Indiana, stressed how important it is for the facility to keep families together. Von Arx said he hopes the program will encourage pregnant women to seek treatment while living with their family after giving birth.
“I think the more the word gets out,” he said, “it's going to inspire more pregnant women, parenting women, to reach out and seek services."
Those seeking treatment will be able to stay from six months to a year in the Grimes Family Center’s apartments. The new facility joins the Seeds of Hope Recovery House and the Father Glenn O’Connor Home to create a sober living campus that has the capacity to care for 75 women and their children.
