The number of police involved shootings in Indianapolis remained high in 2024. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were involved in 17 shootings this year.

That figure is down slightly from last year when IMPD reported 18 shootings, the highest number in recent years.

IMPD entered into a review with the U.S. Department of Justice to examine a cause for the spike. The DOJ is looking at data, policies and practices instituted by the department.

IMPD Chief Christopher Bailey said they have submitted all required materials and are awaiting a draft of the review. Bailey touted officers for their handling of dangerous situations.

“Our cops do a damn good job of de-escalating and bringing things to a successful conclusion. And when we don't get it right, we'll take accountability and we'll deal with it,” Bailey said.

The assessment is still underway and Bailey expects the draft to come in the next 5 months but says it could take longer due to the transition in the U.S.

There were 10 police shootings recorded in 2022 and just four in 2018.
