INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities say an armed suspect was wounded in a shootout with an off-duty Marion County Sheriff's deputy in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis Police Sgt. Kendale Adams says the incident began Monday afternoon when the deputy witnessed an altercation on a street a few miles northwest of downtown and followed a vehicle that sped away from the scene. Adams says the deputy approached the suspect and gunfire was exchanged.

The suspect was shot at least once and taken to a hospital in critical condition. The officer wasn't injured.

Two additional suspects were arrested after authorities searched the area. Police say another man who went to a hospital with a gunshot wound around the same time also may have been involved.

The neighborhood and Riverside School 44 were placed on lockdown as a result of the shooting.

An investigation is ongoing.
