Approximately 130 people turned out Tuesday for a rapid hiring event with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works.

Spokesman Ben Easley said individuals interviewed on the spot for several jobs targeting CDL-holders and mechanics.

“A lot of the positions that we have for the different positions in our solid waste or operations divisions required that CDL license and that’s who we were targeting,” Easley said.

DPW plans to make job offers to around 20 people Wednesday with the opportunity for new hires to begin working on Monday.  The minimum starting rate for positions is $21.30 per hour.

The event was held at Garfield Park.  Easley said DPW is looking at holding more hiring events.
“We were really happy with the turnout this time. Sounds like they are thinking they might want to do different events like this on different sides of town,” Easley said.

Easley said applications from those not immediately hired will be kept on file for future labor positions.
