Police identify officers in fatal shooting of woman on porch

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police released the names Friday of four officers who fired shots in the fatal shooting of a woman on a porch after they say she reached for a gun when they approached her.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department identified the officers as seven-year veteran Keith Shelton, three-year veterans Joshua Smith and Joseph Reynolds and Dylan Sheets, on the force for two years.

The four officers fired and struck 36-year-old Jesse Leonard on a north side porch Sept. 24 after police said she reached for her gun at her waist despite their orders not to touch it.

An IMPD news release did not say whether it’s been determined which officer or officers fatally wounded Leonard or how many shots were fired.

“The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory review of this incident as it does for any use of deadly force against a person,” IMPD said.

No officers were hurt, IMPD said Sept. 24.
