Around 50 people met at the War Memorial downtown Tuesday night to protest the Israeli government and the ongoing war in Gaza.
Activists held signs that said ‘free Gaza’ and ‘stop arming Israel.’ Another message the group was trying to relay is the need to stop supporting businesses that fund the Israeli army.
Malkah Bird, an organizer with Jewish Voice for Peace, said the violence and starvation is only worsening — and nearing a point of no return.
“At this point, everything that we can do, from education to connecting with our faith communities to working with our members of Congress, needs to be done,” said Malkah Bird, an organizer with Jewish Voice for Peace. “We need everybody involved in this work if we're actually going to impact the change that we all know has to happen.”
City-County Councilor Jesse Brown was one of the handful of speakers at the rally. He urged protestors to call on their local and state legislators to stop funding the Israeli government.
“When we come together like this, this is how we connect with each other,” Bird said. “We find support with each other. We show support for our local Palestinian community, and we help to build that power, to build that mass movement, so that when we speak to Congress, they have no choice but to listen to us.”
The war will mark two years this October.
