The Fourth of July weekend consistently ranks as one of the deadliest holidays for traffic-related accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Dozens of Indiana residents were injured or lost their lives on the road last year — and many incidents involved a driver under the influence.

It’s why the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute will offer vouchers for discounted Uber and Lyft rides through its Sober Ride Indiana program, which started in 2020 through funding from the NHTSA to combat impaired driving.

“Driving under the influence puts lives at risk,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of the Institute, in a press release. “Planning ahead for a safe, sober ride is one of the simplest, most effective ways to protect yourself and others on the road.”

The vouchers give $10 off the rides Thursday, July 3 through the early hours of Monday, July 7, and up to 1,000 free credits are available each day. They’re valid for rides that begin or end in Indianapolis or Fort Wayne between 5 p.m. and 3 a.m. on these days.

Tips are not included in the discount, and riders are responsible for any charges exceeding $10. The rides cannot be reserved, and a pickup cannot be scheduled in advance.
