The 9th District seat is currently held by Rep. Todd Young, who announced earlier this week he was joining the race for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Dan Coats, R–Indiana.
Houchin was elected to the Indiana State Senate last year after she defeated incumbent Richard Young, D-Milltown, in the race for the District 47 State Senate seat. She’s a governor-appointed member of the Indiana Commission for Women.
“Our country and our state need and deserve conservative leadership in Washington,” Houchin said in a statement. “It is time conservative principles started winning again.”
Houchin says fighting for a federal balanced budget amendment and border security will be fundamental parts of her campaign.
“While some Republicans advocate amnesty for all illegal immigrants, I don’t believe citizenship should be a reward for those whose first interaction with our country is an illegal act – no matter how well intentioned,” she said.
Houchin received her master’s degree in political management from George Washington University.
