Will Indiana’s redistricting effort split your neighborhood?

After months of speculation about whether Indiana would pursue mid-decade redistricting, Republican state lawmakers released a map Monday, Dec. 1, featuring proposed boundaries for the state’s congressional districts.

The proposal divides Indianapolis into four districts.

Currently, the northern six townships make up District 7, represented by Democratic Rep. André Carson. The southern three townships are part of District 6, which is represented by Republican Rep. Jefferson Shreve.

Congressional boundaries were last redrawn in 2021, following the release of U.S. Census data. Indiana Republicans — who controlled the process then as they do now — at the time lauded the map for keeping more than 90% of counties whole.

The unusual effort to redistrict now is part of a larger, national push by President Donald Trump to give Republicans an advantage heading into the midterm elections in 2026, when the party could lose control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

As part of that effort, Indiana House lawmakers have proposed carving up Indianapolis into four districts, grouping Democratic-leaning voters in the capital city with Republican-leaning areas throughout the state. That could dilute the voting power of Indianapolis Democrats, making it hard for the party to retain Carson’s seat.
