Transgender advocates have filed a public records request for correspondence between the governor's office and Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. They want more information about the decision to hold a second public hearing on a proposed ban on gender changes to state driver's licenses.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is opening a second public comment period on a proposed rule to eliminate gender changes on driver's licenses. Advocates say the move is a "direct dismissal of public will" after dozens of people showed up to the first public hearing in opposition.

The public currently has a chance to weigh in on a proposed rule by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles to ban people from changing the gender marker on their driver's license.

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles will not have to provide a nonbinary gender marker on state IDs and drivers licenses under an Indiana Court of Appeals ruling.
