During the 2024-2025 school year, 6,870 books were challenged or banned in public school districts, according to PEN America. That's more than twice as many bans as two years ago.

This week is National Banned Books Week, and Johnson recently opened a bookstore the Saturday before that sells books by, for and about marginalized people and other books that have been challenged by school or government systems.
