AMERICUS, Ind. (AP) — A company is putting its plans for a stone quarry in a rural area near Lafayette on hold after facing opposition from many nearby residents.
The Tennessee-based Rogers Group says it is withdrawing its request for zoning permission to build the quarry on 524 acres bordering the Wabash River near the Tippecanoe County community of Americus.
Rogers Group vice president Andy Williams tells the Journal & Courier that the company's been working on the project for four years and will continue talking with residents.
Quarry opponents have raised concerns about noise, more truck traffic on county roads and possible lowering of water levels.
Resident Kay Miller tells WLFI-TV the quarry would disrupt life for people living in 230 homes within about a mile of the site.
