“Terre Haute is spurting financial red ink like a nicked artery…” begins a recent story in the Terre Haute Tribune-Star. It was a piece of a five-part series—called “City on the Brink”— outlining the dire financial situation confronting Terre Haute as property tax caps continue to constrain local revenue streams. 90.1 WFYI’s Christopher Ayers recently spoke with Mark Bennett, a Tribune Star columnist who worked on the series, and Max Jones, the paper’s editor, about how the city got to this point, and how it might get itself out.

You can read all five stories in the series here, including the story of how the city’s stalled “sludge-to-diesel” business deal has compounded budget problems.
