INDIANAPOLIS -- A bill described as a complete rewrite of the BMV code passed unanimously through Senate committee Tuesday.
The words “streamline” and “simplify” came up a lot during the Senate committee hearing for House Bill 1087, a bill which aims to do just that for BMV fees and regulations.
General Council for Indiana’s BMV Adam Krupp says 163 user fees will be eliminated or reduced, and that an overly complex fee system will be heavily cut down.
“This fee chart has become somewhat infamous at this point, and I’ve often referred to it as controlled chaos,” Krupp said.
One example of the bill’s streamlining is how the Bureau registers trucks. Right now, there are 21 weight classes for trucks depending on a variety of factors. Under the new bill there are only eight.
The bill passed 7 to 0.
